Q&A with HMCTS Chief Executive Nick Goodwin
Date 04.09.24
HM Courts & Tribunals Service (HMCTS) is responsible for the administration of criminal, civil and family courts and tribunals in England and Wales. Chief Executive Nick Goodwin speaks to the Skills for Justice team to coincide with the Inspire Justice Awards.
HMCTS are prominent supporters of the Inspire Justice Awards. Why did you decide to get involved?
The work we do at HMCTS doesn’t exist in a vacuum. Our role in administering justice connects us to every part of the wider justice system. Supporting the Inspire Justice Awards is a great way for us to recognise the work all of us do, together.
The Inspire Justice Awards shines a light on the justice sector workforce whose roles are often hidden from view. Why you think it’s important to celebrate the justice sector workforce in this way?
As I mentioned before, the justice system is hugely inter-connected, and it’s important to occasionally take the time to pause and celebrate the efforts of thousands of amazing people whose contributions often take place “behind the scenes”.
Courts and tribunals staff are among those recognised at the Inspire Justice Awards. Brimming with talent, just how hotly contested do you think this year’s category will be?
So many of our people in HMCTS go above and beyond “just doing their job”, and yet most of them don’t believe they’ve done anything special – to me, this is what makes them all so amazing. I’m looking forward to seeing which of them particularly stand out to the judges in this category.
You presented an award at last year’s event. What are you looking forward to for 2024?
It’s the stories about real people that make the whole event special. Hearing about innovative new ways of working, of people going that extra mile to make a difference, and of teams challenging and changing the status quo. I find every one of them inspiring.
Finally, what’s your message for this year’s finalists?
If you’ve made it this far, you’re already a winner. So, congratulations and enjoy the event.
