National Crime Agency commissioned Skills for Justice to help deliver assessor awareness training as part of their continuous professional development (CPD) programme.
What we do - Case study
Learning and development best practice for the National Crime Agency
Introduction
National Crime Agency (NCA) have a commitment to their employee experience by providing continuous professional development (CPD). Part of this is to make sure that training and development opportunities are delivering the required skills in the workforce, through rigorous quality assurance processes.
The NCA have built a strong learning and development environment, and identified the need to make sure that leaders and managers were aware of best practices and assessment techniques through their CPD programme.
Having an awareness of assessment methods and how they are used across the organisation will help managers and leaders reinforce learning and development opportunities for their staff. It will also help ensure that employee skills and knowledge meet the demands of the roles they undertake whilst working in a challenging and complex environment.
Activity and approach
Skills for Justice were commissioned to help deliver assessor awareness training as part of the NCA’s CPD programme. We have previously worked with the NCA on their quality assurance processes, and have trained many of their qualified assessors and internal quality assurers through our training centre.
The aim of this programme was to introduce the core concepts of assessing to participants and provide an overview of the key skills, behaviours and actions required to become an effective assessor. Skills for Justice colleagues delivered this training over four one-day virtual sessions.
Outcomes
A cohort of 36 learners were trained on our assessor awareness course, which covered key definitions, models, techniques, ethical standards, responsibilities of contributors, and core practice skills.
All participants rated the course positively, with over 50% giving a rating of excellent. They left understanding more about:
- Functions of assessment
- Standards and regulations
- Assessments methods and cycles
- VARCS principles
- Legal and good practice requirements.
Some participants have gone on to complete the full assessor qualification as part of their ongoing development, underpinning the delivery of high-quality training across the organisation and building on their commitment to providing first-in-class training opportunities for all staff.
